Hey, my space enthusiasts! 🙋♀️ Today we have a situation on the Sun that's worth paying attention to. A large coronal hole is looking directly at our Earth and sending a high-speed solar wind stream our way, which could really stir up geomagnetic conditions in the coming days. And what does that mean? Well, a chance for aurora, of course! 🤩✨
Large coronal hole aimed at Earth

This coronal hole is a really big deal 💪 and it's sitting right on the solar equator. That means the solar wind stream from it will have a significant impact on the space environment around our planet. It's basically like opening a window at Šírava in January. Blooooows! 🌬️😅
When the CIR arrives (a compressed solar wind structure that pushes ahead of the high-speed stream like an excited fan at a concert pushing to the front row 🎤), moderate geomagnetic storms of G2 level are possible, meaning Kp6. And when will it all kick off? 🗓️ Probably on Friday, May 15! NOAA SWPC (the American space weather center) has already issued a G2 warning for that date. This is no joke, folks! 🚨

Who has a chance to see the aurora?
It should be a nice auroral show mainly for people in the southern hemisphere 🌍 and also for those in the northern hemisphere who haven't yet entered the midnight sun period ☀️🌅. As for Slovakia, a G2 storm can sometimes pull the aurora down to lower latitudes, so keep your eyes peeled and follow ziara.sk, where we'll let you know if there's a real chance of catching something here too! 🇸🇰👀

If you want to learn more about what coronal holes are and why they bring us such joy (or worry 😂), check out our explainer article on the website. It's really interesting reading even over a beer 🍺
Otherwise, it's quiet on the Sun
As for solar flares and sunspots, it's pretty quiet right now 🤫. There are no noteworthy sunspot regions on the solar disk worth talking about. The probability of M-class flares in the next 24 hours is low 📉. The Sun is simply taking a break. Probably sipping some juniper brandy somewhere in a corner. I'd understand that 😏🥃
But watch out! That coronal hole could really shake things up on Friday, so follow ziara.sk and be ready 📱🔔. Share this post with everyone who loves the night sky as much as I love a beer after a long night spent photographing aurora! 💚🍻
