On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse awaits us, one of the most amazing astronomical phenomena of this century. For us space-weather folks, it's like a VIP ticket to a concert, except instead of a band, we're jamming with the solar corona. 🎤🌞
This isn't your ordinary eclipse where you say "oh, it's getting a bit dark" and move on. This is a *total* eclipse, meaning the Moon will take the Sun completely for itself for a while, just like my neighbor takes the weekend booze. 🍷😏

## What actually happens when the Sun disappears
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon gets exactly between the Earth and the Sun and blocks (part of) the sunlight. 🌚 Because the Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees relative to Earth, this dance doesn't happen every month, only when a new moon coincides with a node of the lunar orbit. When the Moon appears larger than the Sun in the sky and covers it completely, we call it a total eclipse. ⭐

That's when the Sun's photosphere disappears, revealing its much fainter but incredibly fascinating sister: the solar corona. 🔥 It's a hot, thin atmosphere that's normally overwhelmed by the Sun's intense light. For us space geeks, this is unique, because we usually only see the corona in images from coronagraphs, and now we'll see it live, like a real concert without Instagram filters. 📸💫
## Where and when to catch the total shadow

The eclipse on August 12, 2026 will travel along a long, narrow strip across the Earth, the so-called path of totality, about 120 to 130 kilometers wide. 🗺️ The Moon's shadow will first touch the Earth in the far north, over Siberia and the Arctic regions, then pass over the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, and Iceland, before crossing the Atlantic into Europe.
On the European mainland, it will pass through northern Spain, and totality will also be visible on the Balearic Islands, where the Sun will set low over the horizon. The point of maximum eclipse lies over the Atlantic, where totality will last just over two minutes. Not record-breaking, but enough to catch the whole cosmic show. 🎬

If you want more than just a partial eclipse (which is fine, but a bit like beer without foam), you'll need to travel. Iceland and Spain are the top destinations. In Iceland, the path of totality passes through the western part of the island, including part of the Westfjords and the area around Reykjavík. The Sun will be relatively high in the sky there, so with good weather it could be a truly brutal experience. 🇮🇸 Totality there will last approximately one to two minutes.
Spain also offers a beautiful view, especially in the north and on the Balearic Islands. Totality there will occur in the evening hours, around 20:25 to 20:35 local time. The Sun will be low over the horizon, creating dramatic light and long shadows, but you'll need a clear view of the horizon, without trees, hills, or a drunk neighbor standing in front of you. 😂

## How not to ruin your eyes (and your camera)
And now seriously, because this is really important: the eclipse is beautiful, but it can turn your eyes into scrambled eggs if you're not careful. ⚠️ Even when 80 to 90 percent of the Sun is covered by the Moon, the remaining light is still strong enough to damage your retina. And the worst part is that it doesn't hurt, the damage only shows up hours or days later, and it can be permanent.

So rule number one: outside of totality, NEVER look at the Sun without protection. 🚫👀 The safest option is certified eclipse glasses that block more than 99.999% of sunlight and meet the international ISO 12312-2 standard. Regular sunglasses, even if they're darker than my mood on a Monday morning, won't save you. 🕶️❌
Before use, check your glasses for scratches or cracks; if in doubt, don't use them. Always put your glasses on BEFORE looking at the Sun, and look away before taking them off. For those who want to see more detail, like sunspots or the progress of the Moon's edge, it's worth using a telescope or camera with a solar filter placed IN FRONT of the lens, never behind the eyepiece, since such filters can shatter from the heat. 🔭🔥
